Before you launch on a board
Launch boards feature new products on a given day and let people upvote them, so the products with the most votes get seen most.
A launch board puts your product in front of people who came to see what is new that day, and a good day can bring your first users and a few links. Most boards are small, though: of the 236 that answered our checker, only 28 showed new listings we could date, and 21 only sell paid launches. Pick a few that fit your product rather than all of them.
Start with one main launch, add a handful of smaller boards a day or two apart, and use Free and dofollow to find the ones that cost nothing and give a link that counts. If you have not launched yet, Before you launch has the places that take a waitlist.
How to do it well
Pick one main launch day and tell your waitlist about it the day before.
Have a one-line description, three screenshots and a short demo video ready before you submit anywhere.
Space launches a day or two apart so you can answer the comments on each.
Check the queue and the price on each record; some free queues are weeks long.
Use the same name, tagline and logo everywhere, so the launches read as one product.
How to plan launch day
A launch ranks on what happens in its first hours, so the work is mostly done before the day.
Write the first comment in advance: who you are, why you built it and what you want feedback on.
Line up the people who already know you, such as your waitlist and your social followers, and tell them where to find the launch without asking for votes.
Block the whole day to reply to every comment within the hour.
Have a special offer or a reason to sign up now, since visitors leave fast.
Write down where each visitor came from, so you know which boards to use next time.
Questions founders ask
Is Product Hunt still worth it?
For some products, yes. It is the most visited launch board we checked and launching is free, but the listings we opened were nofollow, so it helps through visitors, not search. It pays off when you bring your own people on the day; a post with nobody behind it rarely ranks.
What is the best free Product Hunt alternative?
It depends on what you make. 133 of the 236 launch boards that were online list you for free, and 15 of those also gave a dofollow link on the listings we opened. Dev Hunt fits developer tools and BetaList fits a product that is not out yet. Product Hunt alternatives compares the ones independent round-ups name most.
How many launch platforms should I launch on?
Three to five that fit your product. Past that, most boards send few visitors, and the time goes into answering comments nobody reads.
Can I launch on Product Hunt and other boards at the same time?
Yes, but not on the same day. Launch on your main board first, then the others a day or two apart, so you can answer each one properly.
What is the best day to launch?
The day your own people can show up. A busy weekday brings more visitors and more competition; a quieter day lets a small launch rank higher. Many boards have queues, so check the record for the next open date before you plan.
Is it worth paying to skip a launch queue?
Sometimes. Pay when the date matters, such as a launch planned around a waitlist email. 21 of the boards only sell paid launches, and where a price was stated on the board's own page, the middle price was $30 across 28 prices.
Do launch boards give dofollow links?
Some do. We opened real listings on 66 launch boards and 23 gave a dofollow link, while 13 were nofollow or went through a redirect. Turn on the Dofollow filter above the list to see them.
Which launch boards are free?
133 of the 236 that were online list you for free, some only if you show their badge. 67 of them ask for their badge on your site in return. The Free filter above the list shows them.
Can I launch before my product is live?
On a few. 4 of the launch boards we checked say on their own pages that they take products before launch, BetaList among them. For more places that take a waitlist, see Before you launch.
How long does a launch board take to approve a launch?
It varies, from minutes to weeks. 47 of them state a review time on their own pages, and a paid launch is usually reviewed first. Each record quotes the time the board states.
Are most launch boards still active?
No. Many have stopped, and we leave those out. Of the 236 we list, only 28 showed new listings with dates we could confirm. Each record carries the date we checked it.
Claiming is free. It lets you correct the details we cannot see from outside, so founders get the right picture before they submit.
What you can do
Correct the facts we cannot measure: the price, the submit link, review time, whether a badge or an account is needed, whether you take products before launch and the one-line description.
Each fact you confirm shows "Confirmed by owner" on your listing.
Get a "Listed on LaunchList" badge for your site, if you want one.
What it does not change
Your rank. Claiming never moves you up or down.
What we measure stays ours: whether the site is alive, whether its link counts and its newest listing.
How we check it is you
Use an email at the site's own domain, such as you@tinystartups.com. No address there? Tick the DNS option and we will give you a TXT record to add. We check each claim by hand, usually within a few days.
