Before you list in a directory

Directories list products by category. A listing stays up, so people browsing or searching that category can find you for months.

A directory listing works slowly: it stays up, so people browsing a category can find you for months, and on some directories the link counts for search. The catch is that many have gone quiet or only sell listings now. Of the 417 that answered our checker, 64 showed new listings we could date and 39 only sell paid ones.

Start with the free and dofollow ones (Free and dofollow has them across every type), then add the few large directories buyers use, even when their links do not count. An AI product has its own list in AI directories.

How to do it well

  • Pick the most specific category a directory offers; broad ones are crowded and nobody scrolls them.
  • Write the description once, plainly, and reuse it: what it does and who it is for.
  • Read whether a free listing needs a badge or a link back before you submit.
  • Submit to a few a week and keep a sheet of where and when, so you can tell later which ones sent visitors.

How to spot a dead or spam directory

A directory that has stopped adding products, or exists only to sell links, costs you a form and sometimes a fee. A few checks take a minute.

  • Look for a dated listing from the last month. We confirmed one on 64 of 417; each record shows the newest date we found.
  • Open the submit page. If every option costs money and nothing is reviewed, it is selling ads, not curating.
  • Open a few listings. If they are unrelated sites with no descriptions, the directory is a link farm.
  • Skip any directory that promises a domain rating, a ranking or a number of visitors for a fee.

Questions founders ask

How many directories should I submit my startup to?

Twenty or so good ones is plenty for most startups. Past that, most directories are small and the time goes into forms nobody browses. Start with the free and dofollow ones, then add the large ones your buyers use.

Will Google penalize me for submitting to many directories?

Not for a listing in real directories. What search engines treat as spam is buying links to rank, or a sudden pile of links from sites that exist only to sell them. Submit to directories people actually browse, a few at a time, and skip the paid link farms.

Which product directories give a dofollow backlink?

We opened real listings on 101 directories and 56 of them gave a dofollow link. Turn on the Dofollow filter above the list to see them. A link we did not read shows as not known, never as dofollow.

Which product directories are free?

164 of the 417 that were online list you for free, some only if you show their badge. 33 are both free and dofollow; Free and dofollow has them.

How long until directory links help SEO?

Weeks to months. A search engine has to find and crawl the listing page first, and one link from a small directory moves little on its own. Count on directories for steady visitors and a few links over time, not a jump in rankings.

What order should I submit in?

The free and dofollow ones first, then the large directories your buyers use, then paid listings only where the price buys something you can check. Keep the same name, description and logo on every one.

How much does a paid directory listing cost?

Many are free. Where a paid listing had a price stated on the directory's own page, the middle price was $29.49 across 40 prices, and the lowest was $1. A paid listing usually buys a faster review, a featured spot or a dofollow link.

What does "badge required" mean?

The directory lists you for free only if you put its badge, with a link back to it, on your site. 72 of the directories we checked ask for that. Each record says so when the directory's own page states it.

How long does a directory take to approve a listing?

From a day to a few weeks. 83 of them state a review time on their own pages, and a paid listing is usually reviewed first. Each record quotes the time the directory states.

Should I pay a directory submission service?

Only if it tells you exactly where it submits. A service that submits to hundreds of sites at once often includes dead ones, which we leave out of this list. Doing twenty good ones yourself usually beats it.

Can I list my startup before it launches?
