Before you post in a forum
Forums are discussion sites outside Reddit, such as Hacker News and Indie Hackers, where you share your product as a post and talk with the readers.
A forum post reaches people who came to talk, not to browse a list, so it brings the most honest feedback you will get, and sometimes your first users. It only works when the post is a real contribution: what you built, how and what you learned, with the link second.
Pick the one or two communities where your users already talk. Hacker News and DEV suit developer products, Indie Hackers suits founders, and Reddit has its own list in Subreddits. Each of the 41 forums that answered our checker has a record with what we could confirm about posting there.
How to do it well
Read the community's rules and a week of its posts before you write anything.
Lead with the problem and what you learned building it; put the link at the end.
Post when you can stay for the next few hours and reply to every comment.
Join the conversation in other threads first, so your account has a history.
How to post without getting removed
Most removals come from treating a forum like an ad board. A few habits keep a post up.
Post once per community, then come back only with something new, such as a real update.
Never ask friends to vote or comment; most forums detect it and penalize the post.
Use the section the forum gives launches, such as Show HN, rather than the main feed.
Write it yourself: some communities remove posts that read as written by AI.
Questions founders ask
How do I do a Show HN?
Log in, open the submit page and start the title with "Show HN:". Hacker News's FAQ says Show HN is for sharing your personal work and has special rules: it should be something people can try, so link to the product, not a sign-up page or a landing page alone.
What is the best time to post on Hacker News?
No time is reliably best. Many founders post on a weekday morning, US time, when most readers are on, while a quieter hour has less competition. Post when you can stay and answer questions for the next few hours.
Can I ask for upvotes on Hacker News?
No. Its rules forbid it, and posts with votes from a group of friends get penalized. Share the link with people who would want to see it, without asking them to vote.
What title works for a Show HN?
A plain one: "Show HN:", the name, then what it does in a few words. Skip superlatives and marketing words; readers there distrust them.
Why did my Show HN get no traction?
Usually the timing, the title or the link. Most posts sink in minutes, so a good product can still miss. Check that the title says what it does, that people can try it without signing up, and that you replied to the first comments fast.
Is Indie Hackers worth posting on?
Yes, if your readers are founders. Posts that share real numbers, a lesson or how you got your first customers do best there; a plain launch announcement gets little.
Can I post my startup in a forum without getting banned?
Yes, if you follow each forum's rules. Post in the section meant for launches, from an account with some history, and answer every comment.
Do forum links help SEO?
Do not count on it. We have not read the links on forum posts yet, and many large forums mark them nofollow. Post for the readers and the feedback.
Which forums are best for developer tools?
Hacker News, DEV and Hashnode. DEV has a #showdev tag for things you built, and a post on Hashnode also appears in its feed.
Do I need an account to post?
Almost always. Most forums need an account before you post, and some only let a new account post after it has some history. Make one early and take part first.
Claiming is free. It lets you correct the details we cannot see from outside, so founders get the right picture before they submit.
What you can do
Correct the facts we cannot measure: the price, the submit link, review time, whether a badge or an account is needed, whether you take products before launch and the one-line description.
Each fact you confirm shows "Confirmed by owner" on your listing.
Get a "Listed on LaunchList" badge for your site, if you want one.
What it does not change
Your rank. Claiming never moves you up or down.
What we measure stays ours: whether the site is alive, whether its link counts and its newest listing.
How we check it is you
Use an email at the site's own domain, such as you@news.ycombinator.com. No address there? Tick the DNS option and we will give you a TXT record to add. We check each claim by hand, usually within a few days.
