# llms.txt generator: create an llms.txt file for your site

An llms.txt generator builds the Markdown file of the proposed llms.txt convention: a site name, a short summary and sections of links to your key pages. You fill in the fields, and it checks the structure and gives you a file to copy or download. Some AI tools may read it, but Google says it does not use llms.txt for Search.

## What you enter

- **Site name**: Required. Becomes the H1 of the file.
- **Short summary**: Required. Becomes the blockquote under the name.
- **Additional details (optional)**: Extra context in plain text, without headings.
- **Section title**: The heading for a group of links. Add as many sections as you need.
- **Page title**: The link text for one page.
- **Page URL**: A complete HTTP or HTTPS address, without credentials or spaces.
- **One-line note (optional)**: A short note shown after the link.
- **Optional pages**: Secondary links an agent can skip when it needs a shorter context. They appear under the reserved heading Optional.

## How it works

The llmstxt.org proposal uses this order: an H1 site name, a blockquote summary, optional details without headings, then H2 sections containing Markdown link lists. Each link has a title and URL, with an optional colon and note. The reserved Optional section holds secondary links that an agent can skip for a shorter context.

This generator requires a name and summary, keeps your section order, and puts Optional last when it has links. Blank page rows and empty sections are omitted. It treats text fields as literal text, flattens line breaks, and escapes Markdown punctuation to preserve the file structure. Links must be complete HTTP or HTTPS URLs without credentials or spaces. These checks validate structure, not whether the pages exist or the content is accurate.

Publish the file as plain text at /llms.txt on your own site. Replace every example URL first. Keep it short and current; link directly to a Markdown version only when that version actually exists. The proposal also permits files at subpaths for content under those paths.

Google's Search guidance says it does not use llms.txt. Some AI tools may read it, but publishing one does not promise citations, traffic, or training inclusion. It does not replace robots.txt, a sitemap, or useful public pages.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is llms.txt?

It is a proposed convention for a Markdown file that gives AI tools a concise site overview and links to useful pages. It is intended to help tools that choose to read it, rather than to control access or guarantee discovery.

### Does Google use llms.txt for Search?

No. Google Search Central says Search does not use llms.txt, including for its generative AI features. Creating this file is not a substitute for crawlable, useful pages and established SEO practices.

### Will llms.txt make ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity cite my site?

There is no such guarantee. Some AI tools may read the file, but behavior varies by tool and workflow. This generator does not verify adoption by a specific assistant or measure citation changes.

### Where should I put llms.txt?

For a whole-site guide, publish it at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt as a public plain text file. The proposal also permits subpaths, such as /docs/llms.txt, for pages under that path. Open the published address and check the content and links.

### What belongs in the Optional section?

Put secondary links there that an agent can skip when it needs a shorter context, such as older release notes or supporting background. Keep essential product facts and documentation in the main sections.

### Does llms.txt replace robots.txt or a sitemap?

No. It provides a curated overview and context. robots.txt communicates crawler access rules, while a sitemap lists URLs for discovery. llms.txt does not grant access to private content or enforce crawling restrictions.

### Is this llms.txt generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account and uses no AI. You enter your site details, then copy or download the file.
