# Product Hunt upvote calculator: forecast your launch day

LaunchList's free Product Hunt upvote calculator estimates the upvotes your own support can bring on launch day, not your rank. It multiplies your email list by its open rate and the share who upvote, adds the people you message directly and spreads the day by hours live, so you get your expected upvotes, your hourly pace and the gap to a leaderboard score.

## What you enter

- **People you will email on launch day**: Your waitlist or newsletter: people who already asked to hear from you.
- **Share who open the email**: Use your own recent open rate. 35% is Mailchimp's average across all its users, which Apple Mail's automatic opens push up.
- **Share of openers who visit and upvote**: A placeholder to replace. Check your last email's click rate: people who never click will not upvote.
- **People you will message one to one**: Friends, customers and peers with a Product Hunt account who have said they will look.
- **Share who show up and upvote**: A placeholder to replace. Count how many of them actually replied to your last request.
- **Launch time**: Product Hunt's day runs on Pacific time. Its own rule of thumb is 12:01 am.
- **Upvotes from Product Hunt's own visitors**: Product Hunt does not publish this, so it starts at 0. Add a number only if you have one from a past launch.
- **Leaderboard score to compare with**: 267 was the third place score on Product Hunt's daily leaderboard for Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Look up several recent days for the place you want.

## How it's calculated

The forecaster counts the support you can bring yourself. It does not predict a rank: Product Hunt says its leaderboard moves on upvotes, comments, time since submission and other factors, and that it keeps the exact algorithm private so it cannot be gamed. Any tool that prints your odds of finishing first is guessing at a formula nobody outside Product Hunt has seen.

- **From your email = people emailed × open rate × share of openers who upvote.**
- **From people you tell = people messaged × share who show up and upvote.**
- **From Product Hunt's visitors = your full-day estimate × hours live ÷ 24.** It starts at 0 because Product Hunt does not publish traffic per launch. The forecaster assumes these visitors arrive evenly across the day, which is a simplification.
- **Hours live = 24 - launch hour**, on Pacific time. Product Hunt recommends 12:01 am so people get a full 24 hours to see the product.
- **Pace = expected upvotes ÷ hours live.**
- **Extra people to email = gap ÷ (open rate × upvote share).** Extra people to tell works the same way with the show-up share.

## Choosing your numbers

The open rate defaults to 35%, rounded down from Mailchimp's published average across all its users. Mailchimp notes that Apple Mail Privacy Protection can inflate opens, so your own figure from your last send is better. The two upvote shares are placeholders, not benchmarks: nobody publishes how many readers of a launch email go on to upvote. Pick them from what your list has actually done, such as the click rate on your last email.

The score to compare with defaults to 267, the third place score on Product Hunt's daily leaderboard for October 13, 2026. That page shows a score built from voting, discussion and activity rather than a vote count, so it is a rough yardstick, not an upvote target. Open the leaderboard for several recent days, on the weekday you plan to launch, and use the score of the place you want.

## How to read the result

The headline is the support you can count on before Product Hunt's own visitors do anything. If it sits well below the score you picked, the launch depends on strangers, and the extra people figures show how much bigger your own list would need to be instead.

## What moves it

The size of the list you can email is the biggest lever, because it is the one you can grow before the day. A [pre-launch waitlist](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/pre-launch-waitlist) is one way to grow it. Starting late shortens the day. The day of the week changes who you compete with: Product Hunt says larger companies tend to launch on weekdays, and that weekend launches get 15% more clicks on the Visit button than weekday ones. Product Hunt also says all upvotes are equal, and that you cannot ask people directly to upvote, so [tell people you are live](https://getlaunchlist.com/features/launch-day) and ask for feedback.

## Frequently asked questions

### What time should I launch on Product Hunt?

Product Hunt's own rule of thumb is 12:01 am Pacific time, because its day runs on Pacific time and launching at the start gives people a full 24 hours to see the product. It also notes that European, Asian and African startups may benefit from launching earlier in the day.

### What is the best day to launch on Product Hunt?

Product Hunt says the best day is the one you are most prepared for. It notes that larger companies tend to launch on weekdays, and that products launched on a weekend get 15% more clicks on the Visit button than those launched on weekdays.

### How do I launch on Product Hunt?

Start with Product Hunt's own launch guide, at producthunt.com/launch. Around it, three things are in your hands: grow the list you can email before the day, pick a launch time (Product Hunt's rule of thumb is 12:01 am Pacific, so the product gets the full 24 hours), and on the day tell your list and your network you are live and ask what they think. Product Hunt does not allow asking people directly to upvote. This calculator shows how much support your own list and network bring before Product Hunt's visitors do anything.

### How many upvotes do you need to be Product of the Day?

There is no fixed number. It depends on who else launches that day, and Product Hunt ranks by upvotes, comments, time since posting and other factors it does not publish. Its daily leaderboard shows a score rather than a vote count, so look up recent days on the weekday you plan to launch and compare against those scores.

### How does the Product Hunt algorithm rank launches?

Product Hunt says the leaderboard changes through the day based on upvotes, comments, time since submission and other factors, and that it keeps the details private so the homepage cannot be gamed. It also says all upvotes are equal, and that a product ranking lower than expected may have had spam detected in its upvotes or comments.

### Can I ask people to upvote my Product Hunt launch?

No. Product Hunt says you cannot ask people directly to upvote your product. Tell your list and your network that you are live, ask them to visit and share what they think in the comments, and let them decide.

### How accurate is this forecast?

It is only as good as the rates you enter. It multiplies your list size and your own open and response rates, so the closer those are to what your audience has actually done, the closer the forecast. It does not predict your rank, because nobody outside Product Hunt knows the ranking formula.
