# Queue jumping

Queue jumping is the waitlist mechanic in which a signup moves ahead of others in line by referring new people. It gives every signup a direct, personal reason to share their referral link, and is the main engine of a referral waitlist.

## How queue jumping works

Every signup gets a personal referral link. When a friend joins through it, the person who shared it moves up the line, ahead of people who joined earlier but haven't referred anyone. The line is recalculated as referrals come in, so it is not strictly first come, first served. A person who climbs this way is sometimes called a waitlist jumper.

Robinhood's pre-launch waitlist is the example most founders know: it showed every signup their place in line and how inviting friends would move them up.

## Two ways to calculate the jump

| | Fixed jump | Points-ranked |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How it works | Each referral moves you up a set number of places | Each referral earns points, and the line is sorted by points |
| What a referral is worth | The same jump, whoever you pass | Depends on how many people near you have the same points |
| Ties | Not applicable | Broken by who joined first |
| Strength | Easy to explain | Fair, and stays consistent as the list grows |

Most referral waitlists now use the points model, because it treats every signup by the same rule. A fixed jump still has a place as a one-off reward, for example "refer one friend and move up 10 places".

## Why it works

Queue jumping turns a passive signup into an active one. Joining a list is a small act; seeing that one text to a friend moves you from #812 to #640 is a reason to send it. It also feeds itself: the friends who join get their own link and their own reason to share, which is what turns a waitlist into a [viral loop](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/viral-loop).

## Keeping it fair

- **Explain the rule on the page.** People accept being passed when they know they could do the same.
- **Count only real referrals.** A referral should count when the friend confirms, and only if it passes fraud checks.
- **Reward early signups on ties.** Breaking ties by join order means patience still counts.
- **Make the line mean something.** If the order has no effect on who gets in, jumping it is an empty game.

## When it backfires

Queue jumping attracts gaming if the reward is large and the checks are weak: fake accounts, throwaway inboxes and scripts that sign up "friends". It also loses its pull if the numbers feel hopeless. Pair a position with how far one referral moves someone, and with [milestone rewards](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/milestone-rewards), so the next step always looks reachable.

## Queue jumping in LaunchList

LaunchList ranks your waitlist by points, with ties broken by who joined first, so every credited [referral](https://getlaunchlist.com/features/referrals) moves the sharer up. You set what a referral is worth, and from the Collect plan you can give points for bonus tasks such as following you on X or joining your Discord. A reward (the Collect plan and up) can also move someone up a set number of places the moment they earn it.

A referral is credited once the friend confirms their email, or at signup on a form without confirmation, and it has to pass the fraud checks first: a second signup from the same device earns nothing, one IP address can only earn so many referrals, and referrals that pile up faster than anyone really shares stop counting. Each signup's [status page](https://getlaunchlist.com/features/status-page) shows their [queue position](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/queue-position), how far they have moved since their last visit, and how far one more referral would take them.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is queue jumping the same as queue position?

They are related but different. Queue position is the number showing where you stand. Queue jumping is the act of improving that number by referring others. The position is the score; jumping is how you change it.

### Does queue jumping actually motivate referrals?

It is one of the strongest motivators a waitlist has, because the reward is immediate and personal: refer a friend, move up now. It works best when people can see their position change and know how far one more referral will take them.

### Is queue jumping unfair to people who joined early?

It can feel that way if nobody explains it. Say on the page that sharing moves people up, and break ties by who joined first, so early signups keep their place over anyone with the same number of referrals.

### How do waitlists stop people from cheating to jump the queue?

By counting a referral only after the friend confirms their email, refusing self-referrals and repeated referrals from one device or IP address, limiting referrals that arrive faster than anyone really shares, and taking credit back if fraud turns up later.
