# Pre-launch waitlist

A pre-launch waitlist is a list of people who signed up to hear about a product before it is available. Founders use it to test demand, build an audience to launch to, and, with referral links, let the list grow itself before launch day.

## The three jobs of a pre-launch waitlist

A pre-launch list, sometimes just called a pre-launch list or launch list, does three things at once:

1. **It tests demand.** People who give you their email for something that doesn't exist yet are telling you something. Their answers to a signup question tell you even more.
2. **It builds a launch audience.** On launch day you are not starting from zero. You are telling people who already asked to hear from you.
3. **It grows itself.** With referral links, every signup can bring in the next ones. This is what separates a modern waitlist from the old one-shot "notify me" form.

## The parts

| Part | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| A [coming soon page](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/coming-soon-page) or embedded form | Says what is coming and collects the signup |
| Confirmation | Makes sure each address belongs to a real person who wants to hear from you |
| A personal status page | Shows each signup their place in line and their referral link |
| Referral mechanics | A [queue position](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/queue-position) that improves and rewards that keep people sharing |
| Email | Updates while people wait, and the announcement when you launch |
| A way in | Invites that let people off the list, a group at a time |

## The stages

1. **Collect.** Publish the page, share it, and confirm signups as they arrive.
2. **Grow.** Turn on referrals and rewards. Watch which channels bring people in.
3. **Keep in touch.** Send updates on what you are building, so the list stays interested and remembers who you are.
4. **Let people in.** Invite the first group as [early access](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/early-access), learn from them, then widen in rounds.
5. **Launch.** Tell everyone at once, starting with the people who have waited longest or referred most.

## Running a pre-launch referral program

Give every signup a personal link the moment they join, and a reason to use it. The two reasons that work best before launch are a better place in line and access sooner. Count a referral only when the friend confirms, so nobody climbs with made-up addresses. Show each person how far one more referral moves them, and set a ladder of rewards so there is always a next step.

## What makes the signal real

A large list is not proof of demand on its own. Look at:

- **Confirmation rate.** How many signups were real people with real inboxes.
- **Referral activity.** Whether people care enough to tell a friend.
- **Answers and replies.** Whether people tell you what they need when you ask.
- **Where they came from.** A list built from one viral post behaves differently from one built from a steady stream of targeted visitors.

How well your page turns visitors into signups is the [waitlist conversion rate](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/waitlist-conversion-rate), the first number to watch.

## Mistakes that let a waitlist go cold

- Collecting signups and then saying nothing until launch day.
- Asking only for an email when one more question would tell you whom to invite first.
- No plan for how people get in, so the line never moves.
- Padding the count with fake or unconfirmed signups.
- Launching to the whole list at once with an email it doesn't expect.

## Pre-launch waitlists in LaunchList

LaunchList is pre-launch waitlist software for founders. You publish a hosted Launch page or embed a signup form on your own site, and every signup is checked for spam before it joins your list. Each person gets a status page with their place in line and a personal [referral](https://getlaunchlist.com/features/referrals) link, and rewards you set keep them sharing. You can email your list from inside LaunchList with broadcasts and automations ([email](https://getlaunchlist.com/features/email)), let people in with personal invite codes, and run your countdown and go-live from [Launch Day](https://getlaunchlist.com/features/launch-day).

## Frequently asked questions

### How long should a pre-launch waitlist run?

Long enough to test demand and gather an audience, short enough that early signups still remember you on launch day. Many founders run one for a few weeks to a few months. The longer it runs, the more it matters to send updates along the way.

### How many signups validate a pre-launch idea?

There is no universal number, because it depends on your market, your price and how hard you promoted. What signups do says more than how many there are: whether they confirm, refer friends, answer your questions and reply to your emails. A smaller list that engages is a stronger signal than a large one that doesn't.

### What's the difference between a pre-launch waitlist and an email list?

A pre-launch waitlist is an email list with a purpose and an end: everyone on it is waiting for one product, and the list ends when they get in. It usually adds a place in line, a referral link and a plan for letting people in, which a newsletter list doesn't have.

### What is a pre-launch referral program?

A referral program that runs on a waitlist before the product exists. Each signup gets a personal link, and friends who join through it earn the sharer a better place in line or a reward, such as early access. It is the main way a pre-launch list grows beyond the traffic you drive yourself.

### Can I build a pre-launch waitlist without a website?

Yes. A hosted waitlist page gives you a public address, a signup form and a status page for each signup with no site of your own. If you already have a site, you can embed the signup form there instead, or use both.
