# Milestone rewards

Milestone rewards are benefits a waitlist signup earns on reaching set referral counts, for example moving up the line at one referral, early access at three and a founding-member perk at ten. A ladder of milestones keeps people referring past their first goal.

## How milestone rewards work

You set referral counts and attach a reward to each one. Every signup sees their next milestone and how many more referrals it takes to reach it. When a friend they invited joins and the referral is credited, their count goes up, and when it reaches a milestone, the reward is theirs.

The point of a ladder, rather than a single reward, is to keep people going. A single prize motivates one push. A ladder gives someone who just earned a reward an immediate next goal.

## Designing a reward ladder

An illustrative ladder for a product in private beta:

| Referrals | Reward |
| --- | --- |
| 1 | Move up the line |
| 3 | Early access to the beta |
| 10 | Founding-member status |
| 25 | A t-shirt |
| 50 | A call with the founding team |

A few principles behind a ladder like this:

- **Make the first rung easy.** One referral is enough for an early win, and someone who has shared once has already shown they will share.
- **Widen the gaps as you go up.** Fewer people keep going at each step, so the higher rungs exist for the handful who do.
- **Tie rewards to the product.** [Early access](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/early-access) and founding-member perks attract people who want what you are building. Cash prizes attract people who want cash.
- **Only promise what you will deliver.** An unfulfilled reward turns your most enthusiastic sharers into your loudest critics.

## Kinds of reward

- **Position:** moving up the line, the reward behind [queue jumping](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/queue-jumping).
- **Access:** getting in early, skipping a beta waitlist, extra invites for friends.
- **Status:** a founding-member badge, a name on a thank-you page.
- **Things:** swag, stickers, a printed thank-you note.
- **Time:** a call with the founders, a vote on the roadmap.

## Mistakes to avoid

- A first milestone so high that almost nobody reaches it.
- Rewards that only make sense after launch, offered with no date.
- Counting referrals before they confirm, so fake signups earn rewards.
- Forgetting to tell people when they have earned something.

## Milestone rewards in LaunchList

Set [rewards for referrals](https://getlaunchlist.com/features/referrals) at any count, from the first referral to the fiftieth, and name them in your own words. Some happen the moment they are earned: moving someone up a set number of spots, giving bonus points or adding a tag. Others, like early access, merch or a call, are listed in the Rewards section with everyone who earned them and is still waiting, so you can export the list, hand them out and mark each one given.

Each signup's [status page](https://getlaunchlist.com/features/status-page) shows the reward ladder, ticks off what they have earned, and says how many more referrals the next reward takes. In Analytics, the Referrals tab counts how many people sign up, refer someone and reach a reward, so you can see where the ladder loses people. Referrals have to pass the fraud checks before they count toward a reward, and a [referral leaderboard](https://getlaunchlist.com/glossary/referral-leaderboard) can sit alongside it.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are good milestone thresholds?

Put the first rung low enough that most sharers reach it, often a single referral, so people get an early win. Space the next rungs further apart and give the top ones rewards only a few people will earn. The right numbers depend on how shareable your product is, so adjust them once you see where people stop.

### Do milestone rewards need to cost money?

No. Early access, a better place in line, a founding-member badge, a feature vote or a call with the team all motivate referrals and cost little. Rewards tied to the product also attract people who want the product.

### How many milestones should a referral program have?

Enough that there is always a next step, and few enough that people can read the whole ladder at a glance. Three to five rungs is a common shape, but a single well-chosen reward beats five that nobody wants.

### What's the difference between milestone rewards and a leaderboard?

Milestone rewards are earned by anyone who reaches a referral count, so many people can win them. A leaderboard ranks people against each other, so only the top few win. Many waitlists use both: milestones for everyone, a leaderboard for the most active sharers.
